Domestic Travel Woes

I flew a certain airline to Lahore today. I wish I could say it was a pleasant journey. For one thing, I regret having asked for an aisle seat. With shoulders as broad as mine, that proved to be a severe mistake – especially on the planes tiny, cramped seats. The airlines rather large-framed hostesses seemed intent on dislocating my shoulder. In fact, I’m considering luggaging my shoulders during my next trip! Another funny thing. After the meal: Air Hostess: Chai? Me: No thanks. Could I have coffee instead? AH: Sorry sir, we’re out of coffee. Me: You’re out of coffee!? AH: I mean we’re almost out of coffee. Me: Could you make sure I get a cup before you actually run out of coffee? AH: Yes, sure sir. Of course, I never got to see that cup. The one part I enjoyed was the safety demo “Thaank you Vaary much for your attaantion.” This trip is gonna be fun!

Ah! So I’m back! From the longest vacation I’ve had since I started work! And man the last ten days of these vacations have been the most adventurous and happening days of my life! I rode a horse unguided for the first time. I got interrogated by an army officer for asking around the location of the army mess. I attended the well-scripted wedding of a friend of 18 years, scripted by the dulha himself. I rode a chairlift and the steepest cable car 3000 miles apart, over two of the most beautiful landscapes nature has to offer. I flew a low-budget airline for the first time, where you have to pay for every cup of coffee you have. I rode the monorail for the first time, in KL. I climbed two-hundred-and-seventy-two steps to the top of a cave housing a Hindu temple. I saw the sun set over one of the most hypnotizing beaches of the world. I offered prayers at the largest masjid in Malaysia, and at the oldest masjid in Malacca. I prayed the juma’ behind a Malaysian imam in a local neighborhood masjid. I attended a traditional Malay nikah ceremony. I climbed 335 meters to the KL Menara. I carried a backpack for six days straight! I rode a swing after probably 18 years, and I saw my Ammi and Baba do the same. I had the sweetest narial paani in the world. I learned what a love letter is called in Malay. I got photographed with a bald eagle, a hornbill and an owl (amongst other birds). I saw the traditional Malay Batik artwork in process. I fed and patted a deer. I went through a Mangrove forest. I photographed a sand viper at close range. I drove a powerboat. I drove a rickshaw. I stood on a suspension bridge 650 feet above sea level. I visited the past of a city torn between the British, the Portuguese and the Dutch. I tried dozens of local Malay foods and snacks. I discovered that every third car in Malaysia is a Proton. And I discovered that 50 years is a lot of time for a nation to mature and to come into it’s own.

But more on all that later! Yeah, I’m gonna rub all that in for a long, long time :P
