I’ve come to think that Anastasia is probably the best movie of all time. Ingrid Bergman was phenomenal in the entire movie, and Yul Brynners dialog delivery was the best I’ve ever seen! I quote a small piece from near the end of the movie between Yul Brynner and that woman who played the Empress (I don’t know her name). The setting is that the engagement of Anastasia with Prince Paul is to be announced at the official declaration of royal ascent on Anastasia. Yul Brynner has fallen for the Duchess and does not wish to stay for the ceremony, even though in the same ceremony great honor is to be bestowed upon him by the Empress for restoring Anastasia to royalty. The Empress, sensing some tension, asks whether General Bounine (Yul Brynners character) is pleased on the occasion. Bounine responds with a very well delivered dialog: “If that is what that the Grand Duchess so desires, then yes, I must be pleased. But for myself – no, I am not pleased.“ This past week on American Idol, Adam Lambert did an amazing cover of “Tracks of my Tears” by Smokey Robinson. I liked it much, much better than the original song.
